Today is a lovely summer ‘Easter Saturday’ (and yes, I know that’s not strictly a thing, but you know which day I’m talking about) and we spontaneously nipped out earlier to the grounds of a local museum where volunteers had organised an Easter trail for children. We’d seen it advertised on social media but were waiting to see what the weather would be like. It was perfect so, for £1, we thought we’d have a go.

The instructions had us follow a trail through the grounds to find handmade signs. Each had a clue to complete an Easter crossword.

Smiling volunteers manned their posts and handed out crossword papers on handmade clipboards. Little group after little group of visitors wandered round the sun blessed grounds laughing, and arguing, over clues and passing a beautiful hour or so together.

I was struck with how much I’d missed these sorts of things during the covid lockdowns but mostly how grateful I am to volunteers who feel so committed to provide these little gem opportunities for children and families. It took me back to me my 2018 post

All those points stand just as true for me.

Volunteers, I salute you.
